Closed rhinoplasty Korea: six common myths, checked
For closed rhinoplasty Korea clinics offer, the incisions sit inside the nostrils, so no cut crosses the skin between them. What most people from abroad worry about is the follow-up: how long to stay in Seoul and what happens once they are home.
By the end of this guide, your questions about rhinoplasty should turn into a clear next step.

Send my photos on WhatsAppTIANA is a nose-only clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. It does no eyelids, contouring or liposuction. It has an anesthesiologist on staff, uses 3D-CT to look at bone and nasal passages before planning, and offers high-concentration oxygen care after surgery.
If you are unsure whether your nose suits a closed approach, send three photos (front, side, and from below) on WhatsApp: Send your nose photos on WhatsApp.
What is a closed rhinoplasty, exactly?
A closed rhinoplasty is nose surgery done through cuts placed inside the nostrils. The surgeon lifts the skin from within and reshapes cartilage and bone without opening the nose from the outside. An open approach adds a small cut across the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils, so the skin can be folded up for a direct view.

Both reach the same structures. What differs is how much the surgeon can see and how much tissue is moved to get there.
Does closed rhinoplasty really mean no incisions?
Closed rhinoplasty still involves cuts. They are hidden inside the nostril, which is why no scar shows on the outside skin. The nose is still operated on, the tissue is still swollen afterwards, and the same recovery rules apply.

Wondering which type your nose is?
Share your profile and front photos — the surgeon will tell you which procedures your nose would actually need. No cost, no obligation.
Ask which procedure fits meIs closed rhinoplasty always faster to recover from?
A closed approach disturbs less tissue in many cases, so some people swell less. But recovery depends mostly on what is done inside. A small tip refinement and a full redesign of bridge, tip and height are different operations whichever door the surgeon uses.
For planning, the clinic's own figures are these: major swelling settles in about 1 to 2 weeks for many people, and a natural look takes roughly 3 to 4 weeks, longer for full rhinoplasty and revisions. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that fine swelling can take a long time to fully go down, so judge the shape at months, not days.
Can a closed approach handle a bulbous or wide tip?
Many tip refinements are done through a closed approach. Reducing a rounded tip means reshaping and drawing the tip cartilages together, and that can be reached from inside. Where the tip needs heavy structural support, such as grafts built from septal cartilage, surgeons often want a wider view. Reviews of Asian rhinoplasty, such as Ishii's 2014 paper in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open, discuss tip work, grafting and implant choices as a set of decisions, with skin thickness and cartilage quality shaping them.
So the honest answer is that it depends on your tip cartilage and skin thickness. A photo and an exam answer it, a search result does not.
| Question | Closed tends to fit | Open tends to fit |
|---|---|---|
| Scar outside the nose | None | Small line on the columella |
| Tip needs heavy rebuilding | Sometimes | More often |
| Small refinements | Often | Possible |
Does a revision always need open surgery?
Revision is the case where the choice matters most, and no rule fits all. A nose that has been operated on before may have scar tissue or contracture, and cartilage may be thin or missing. If the surgeon needs to see and rebuild, more exposure may be needed. If the problem is small, closed work may be enough. TIANA lists revision, including correction of other clinics' work and contracture, among its procedures.
The approach follows what the exam finds, and your previous surgeon's operative notes, if you have them, help.
Does open rhinoplasty leave a scar everyone will notice?
The columella scar after an open approach is usually small and tends to fade, though no one can promise it disappears. Some people are happy to accept that line for better visibility, and some are not. Neither choice is wrong. The useful question is whether the extra view changes your result enough to be worth the line.
Doctor's note
Rhinoplasty is delicate surgery where a fraction of a millimetre changes a face. That is why I dedicate my work to noses alone. I care more about a nose that suits your face than about a dramatic change, and the approach is a tool for that, not a goal in itself.
Does closed surgery mean a short trip?
The approach does not set your stay. TIANA's guide is 7 to 14 nights in Seoul, depending on the procedure. Roughly day 1 is the consultation and surgery, days 2 to 3 are check-ups, and days 5 to 7 are stitch and cast removal. After that you can fly home, and a day or two extra is suggested if swelling worries you.
Some procedures are less invasive. TIANA offers a non-incision tip procedure, which is a lighter option when only the tip is the concern.
What are the real risks?
Every rhinoplasty carries risks: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, a bump or irregularity after healing, breathing changes, and the chance of needing a second operation. The NHS lists these among the possible complications. A closed approach lowers none of them to zero. The in-person exam decides suitability.

What questions are worth asking any surgeon?
Before you commit anywhere, ask which approach they would use on your nose and why, what they would do if the first plan proved insufficient mid-surgery, who handles follow-up after you fly home, and whether they work on revisions. A good answer names your anatomy, not a trend. You can read more about the clinic's focus on the TIANA English site.

What is the next step?
Photos from three angles, a note of any previous nose surgery, and your possible dates are enough to start. Send them on WhatsApp at wa.me/821088356476 and the surgeon looks at them, so you know before booking flights whether a closed approach is a realistic plan for your nose and how many nights to set aside.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1Is closed rhinoplasty the same as non-surgical rhinoplasty?
No. Closed rhinoplasty is surgery with incisions inside the nostrils. Non-surgical rhinoplasty uses injectable filler and no surgery. A systematic review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2020) looked at its technique, outcomes and complications.
Q2How long should I stay in Seoul after a nose job?
TIANA suggests about 7 to 14 nights depending on the procedure. Stitches and cast are removed around days 5 to 7, and an extra night or two is advised if swelling is a concern.
Q3Can a closed approach be used for revision surgery?
Sometimes. It depends on scar tissue, remaining cartilage and what has to be rebuilt. The surgeon decides after looking at your nose and, if possible, your earlier surgical records.
Q4Do I need to speak Korean?
No. TIANA runs consultations on WhatsApp and Google Meet in English, and photos are enough to start.
Q5Does the cost depend on closed versus open?
Cost depends on the area treated, how many structures are reworked, the material used and whether it is a revision. Send a photo on WhatsApp and the team tells you what applies to your case.
