Alar Reduction Korea: When Nostril Surgery Is Enough

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Choi Hang-seok, Head Surgeon6 min read

Searching for alar reduction Korea options because your nose looks wide? Is nostril surgery all you need, or is the width you see in the mirror coming from somewhere else?

By the end of this guide, your questions about rhinoplasty should turn into a clear next step.

Send 5 photos (front, 45-degree and side) on WhatsApp and we will reply in English with a free first assessment: the likely scope of surgery and how the estimate is worked out.

That question comes up in almost every consultation about a wide nose. Read this before you book a nostril surgery on its own.

By the end you'll know what alar reduction changes, how to tell whether your nose needs it, when it works well alone, and when the tip or bone is the real cause. That should help you ask for the right scope from the start.

Hello, I'm Dr. Choi Hang-seok, Head Surgeon at TIANA Plastic Surgery in Gangnam, Seoul.

TIANA performs only rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty. I handle each patient one-to-one from consultation through surgery, anesthesia and aftercare. Before surgery, 3D-CT imaging maps your bone and nasal structure.

The short answer: alar reduction, sometimes searched as nostril reduction Korea, narrows flared nostril wings or wide nostril openings. If your nose looks wide because of a round tip or a broad bony bridge, nostril surgery alone won't fix that, and the plan needs to include the part that is actually wide.

If you're unsure which part of your nose is wide, send five photos on WhatsApp (front, both 45-degree angles and both side profiles) and ask: which part of my nose makes it look wide?

What does alar reduction Korea surgery actually change?

The alae are the curved wings on each side of the nostrils. In alar base reduction, a small wedge of skin and tissue is removed so the wings sit closer to the face or the nostril openings become smaller.

There are two common patterns, and many people have a mix of both:

What you see Usual approach Where the incision sits
Wings that flare out sideways Outer (external) excision In the crease where the nostril meets the cheek
Large, round nostril openings Inner (internal) excision Inside the nostril sill
Both flaring and large openings Combined excision Both locations

I explain these methods in my video on common misunderstandings about alar reduction (the video is in Korean).

Is Alar Reduction Alone Enough? Myths and Facts

How to tell whether your nose needs alar reduction

Stand in front of a mirror, look straight ahead and relax your face. Then check three things.

  • Wing width: imagine a vertical line down from the inner corner of each eye. Wings that sit clearly outside those lines are often wider than the face around them.
  • Flare when you smile: wings that spread a lot when you smile or talk point to flaring.
  • Nostril shape from below: large, round openings visible from the front point to the nostril size, not only the wings.

Now check the tip. Wide nose surgery is not one operation. If the tip itself is broad and round, a wide-looking nose may be a bulbous tip, not a wide base. In that case, narrowing the nostrils can leave the tip looking even bigger by comparison.

Doctor's note

When someone tells me their nose is wide, I first find out which of the three parts is wide: the bony bridge, the tip or the nostril wings. Each one has a different solution. Alar reduction is the right answer only for the third.

When alar reduction works well on its own

Alar reduction alone tends to work well when:

  • the bridge and tip already suit your face, and only the wings flare
  • the nostrils look large from the front, but the tip is not broad
  • you've had rhinoplasty before and the base now looks wide by comparison

If the tip is also round, I usually plan the tip and the wings together. Narrowing the tip changes how wide the wings look, so the amount of skin to remove is decided in relation to the new tip. That's one reason alar reduction is often part of a broader plan. You can read how I plan bulbous nose surgery in Korea.

Rhinoplasty example case, hump nose, bulbous tip, front view before and after

Example case (hump nose, bulbous tip): front view before surgery (left) and 2 weeks after (right). Procedures: silicone bridge implant, tip with septal and donor rib cartilage, hump reduction, bulbous tip refinement, osteotomy, crooked-nose correction. Results vary between individuals; swelling, bruising, asymmetry and infection are possible risks. Shared with the patient's consent; eyes and mouth are pixelated for privacy.

Say your nose looks wide in photos

Say you're 32, your nose looks wide in front-facing photos, and you've read that alar reduction Korea clinics offer is a short procedure. You'd like to fix the width in one week.

Here's how I'd reason. If your wings sit well outside the inner-eye lines and your tip is narrow, alar reduction may be enough. If your tip is round under thick skin, the tip is likely the main source of width, and nostril surgery alone would disappoint you.

If your bony bridge is broad, narrowing it is a different operation, usually with osteotomy. A photo set from the front and from below helps me tell these apart before you travel.

Risks, scars and what to avoid

Early on, swelling, mild bruising and a tight feeling around the nostrils are common, and the incision line can look pink for a while. These usually fade gradually, but the pace differs between people.

Less common risks include uneven nostrils, a visible or raised scar, infection, and nostrils that look pinched if too much tissue is removed. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists infection, poor wound healing, scarring and the possible need for revision among rhinoplasty risks.

As a general rule, tell the surgeon before planning if you:

  • form raised or keloid scars easily
  • smoke, since smoking slows wound healing
  • take blood-thinning medicine or supplements (don't stop on your own; ask your prescribing doctor)
  • had nose surgery less than a year ago

Alar reduction Korea trips: how many nights in Seoul?

Plan on about 7 to 14 nights in Seoul, and at least 7. The outer stitches usually come out around day 7, and the timing is confirmed at surgery. If alar reduction is combined with tip or bridge surgery, the splint also comes off around day 7, and the inner stitches around day 14.

If you fly home around day 7, you leave with a referral letter and a surgery certificate. The clinic is open 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays, closed on Sundays and public holidays. More on planning the trip is in how long to stay in Seoul for rhinoplasty, and other articles are collected in all alar reduction articles.

Summary

  • Alar reduction narrows flaring wings or large nostril openings.
  • A nose can look wide because of the bridge, the tip or the wings, and each needs a different plan.
  • It works well alone when the bridge and tip already suit your face.
  • Removing too much can make nostrils look pinched, so a conservative amount is safer.
  • Plan at least 7 nights in Seoul.

Send five photos on WhatsApp (front, both 45-degree angles, both side profiles), plus one taken from slightly below. Ask which part of your nose makes it look wide, and you'll get a reply in English. When you come to Seoul, I examine your nose, 3D-CT maps the structure, and we decide the scope together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Will alar reduction leave a visible scar?

The incision follows the natural crease where the nostril meets the cheek, or sits inside the nostril. In most people the line becomes hard to notice as it matures, but how a scar heals varies, so tell us if you scar easily.

Q2Can alar reduction make my nose look smaller from the front?

It narrows the lower width of the nose: the nostril wings and the nostril openings. If the width you notice is the tip or the bony bridge, alar reduction alone won't change that part, which is why I check where the width comes from first.

Q3Can alar reduction be combined with other rhinoplasty?

Yes. It's often planned together with tip work or a bridge implant, because narrowing the nostrils changes how the tip looks. Doing it in one surgery means one recovery and one trip to Seoul.

Q4When are the stitches removed after alar reduction?

At TIANA the outer stitches usually come out around day 7. Timing varies between people and is confirmed at surgery, so plan at least 7 nights in Seoul.

Q5Can too much alar reduction cause problems?

Yes. Removing too much can make the nostrils look pinched or uneven and can feel tight. Taking a conservative amount, matched to your face, is safer than chasing the narrowest possible nose.
