Korean nose job before and after: how to read the photos

By Dr. Choi Hang-seok · Head Surgeon5 min read

Korean nose job before and after photos are usually the last thing people check before they message a clinic. They are also the easiest thing to get wrong. A good photo set tells you what a surgeon does with a nose like yours. A poorly matched one only tells you how good the lighting was.

By the end of this guide, your questions about rhinoplasty should turn into a clear next step.

Send 5 photos (front, 45-degree and side) on WhatsApp and we will reply in English with a free first assessment: the likely scope of surgery and how the estimate is worked out.

You do not need special tools to tell the difference. Check four things in every photo set: the angle, the light, the date of the after photo, and what was actually done. Here is how, using TIANA's own cases as examples.

Korean nose job before and after: the 4 things to check first

Check What a fair photo looks like What should make you look twice
Angle Same head position in both photos: chin at the same height, same side of the face Before taken slightly from below, after from the front or above
Light and background Same background, same light, no makeup in either photo Darker before photo, brighter or softer after photo
Face size The face fills the frame by the same amount After photo zoomed in or out, so the nose looks smaller
Date and scope After photo labelled with how long after surgery, and what was done No date, no description, only "after"

These are not rare problems. A study of 888 rhinoplasty before and after sets on Instagram found that almost a quarter had a face size difference of 10% or more between the two photos. Only about a third were rated as high quality, meaning matched photos with the time since surgery stated.

Angle and light: the most common unfair comparison

Tilting the chin up shortens the look of the nose and lifts the tip. Tilting it down makes a hump look bigger. If the before photo is taken with the chin down and the after photo with the chin up, the comparison shows the camera, not the surgery.

Look at where the eye, the ear and the corner of the mouth sit in both photos. In a fair comparison they line up. Then look at the background: if the colour or brightness changes, the lighting changed too.

TIANA case, side profile before and 3 months after rhinoplasty, same angle and background

Same angle, same background, same distance. The label shows the after photo was taken 3 months after surgery. Main risks: swelling and bruising. Results vary from person to person.

Why the date on the after photo matters

A nose keeps changing for a while after surgery as swelling goes down, especially at the tip. An after photo taken early and one taken much later of the same patient can look different. Neither is wrong, but you need to know which one you are looking at.

A fair gallery labels each after photo with when it was taken. If a photo has no date, ask. If the clinic shows only very late results, ask to see an early one too, so you know what you will look like on your flight home.

TIANA case, male patient, side profile before and 2 weeks after rhinoplasty

Labelled 2 weeks after surgery, so this is an early result. Main risks: swelling and bruising. Results vary from person to person.

One angle is never the whole result

Most galleries, ours included, lead with the side profile. It shows bridge height and tip projection better than any other view, and that is what most people want to change.

But a profile cannot show whether the nose is straight from the front, how wide the nostrils are, or how the tip looks from below. A nose can look transformed from the side and almost unchanged from the front. Before you book, ask to see front and 45-degree photos of a case like yours. This is the same reason we ask you for 5 photos (front, 45-degree and side) at the first contact: one angle is not enough to plan a nose.

Look for a nose that started like yours

The most useful before photo is not the most dramatic one. It is the one that looks like your nose today. A low bridge with a round tip, a hump, a wide tip with thick skin, or a nose that has already had surgery each start from a different place and need different work.

If you have had surgery before, look for revision cases specifically. Results after a first surgery do not tell you much about what is possible with scar tissue or an old implant.

TIANA case, side profile before and 1 month after rhinoplasty

Profile line and tip balance refined naturally, labelled 1 month after surgery. Main risks: swelling and bruising. Results vary from person to person.

What I look for in a before and after

When I show a patient our cases, I don't pick the biggest change. I pick a nose that started where theirs is now, so they can see what is realistic for their face. A good result is one where people notice you look better, not one where they notice your nose. If a photo only works from one angle, it is not the whole result.

Questions to ask a clinic about its before and after photos

  • Were these photos taken in the clinic, under the same light, by your staff?
  • How long after surgery was each after photo taken?
  • What was done in this case: bridge, tip, nostrils, which cartilage?
  • Do you have front and 45-degree photos of this case?
  • Can you show me a case that started from a nose like mine?
  • Was this patient's surgery done by the surgeon I will see?

A clinic that answers these clearly is showing you real work. If the answers are vague, the photos are not telling you much.

Reference photos: useful, with limits

Many people bring a photo of a nose they like, often a celebrity's. That is a good starting point for the conversation. The surgeon will compare it with your bone structure, skin thickness and the rest of your face, and tell you which parts can be reached and which cannot. Bring it, but expect an honest answer rather than a copy. More on this in what a natural rhinoplasty in Korea can and cannot do.

See cases for your own nose

The fastest way to see a Korean nose job before and after that means something for you is to start with your own photos.

  1. Send 5 photos on WhatsApp. Front, 45-degree and side, in daylight, without makeup. Add a reference photo if you have one. See which 5 photos to take.
  2. The surgeon replies in English with what is realistic for your nose.
  3. At the consultation in Seoul, with 3D-CT and an interpreter, the surgeon shows you cases that started from a nose like yours.

If you are still comparing clinics, these checks for choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon in Korea go well with the questions above, and how a nose job quote in Korea is built covers the price side. You can also see more cases on TIANA's page for international patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Are Korean nose job before and after photos edited?

Some are, and many more are unfair without being edited: a different angle, brighter light or a closer camera can make a small change look large. Check that both photos match in angle, light, background and face size, and that the after photo is labelled with how long after surgery it was taken.

Q2Why do clinics mostly show the side profile?

The profile shows the bridge height and tip projection most clearly, which is what most patients want to change. It cannot show whether the nose is straight from the front or how wide the nostrils are, so ask for front and 45-degree photos of a similar case too.

Q3How can I find a before and after that looks like my nose?

Send 5 photos of your own nose (front, 45-degree and side) on WhatsApp. The surgeon can tell you what is realistic for your nose and, at the consultation in Seoul, show you cases with a similar starting shape.

Q4Should I bring a reference photo of the nose I want?

Yes, it helps. The surgeon will compare it with your bone structure and skin and tell you which parts are achievable for your face and which are not.

Q5Can I see TIANA's before and after photos?

Yes. Some cases are on the TIANA English page and in this article. More cases are shown at the consultation, where the surgeon can pick ones that started from a nose like yours.
