Korea closed rhinoplasty doctors: when can I fly home?

By Dr. Choi Hang-seok · Head Surgeon5 min read

If you're building a trip around Korea closed rhinoplasty doctors, the date that sets your flight home is the day the splint and stitches come out, usually around day 5 to 7 after surgery. Surgery day itself matters less for your calendar than most people expect. If you have a fixed block of leave and a team expecting you back on video calls, your real question is whether closed surgery saves enough days to make the trip fit.

By the end of this guide, your questions about rhinoplasty should turn into a clear next step.

Send 5 photos (front, 45-degree and side) on WhatsApp and we will reply in English with a free first assessment: the likely scope of surgery and how the estimate is worked out.

I ask patients to plan about 7 to 14 nights in Seoul. At TIANA Plastic Surgery in Gangnam, a clinic that performs only rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, the same surgeon handles your consultation, surgery and aftercare, so the doctor you meet on the first day is the one who operates and follows your recovery in Seoul.

To get your dates right from the start, send your leave dates and one side-profile photo on WhatsApp, and ask: does my nose look like a smaller plan or a full one?

Clinic address: ソウル特別市 江南区 奉恩寺路108

Does closed rhinoplasty shorten the stay in Seoul?

Less than most people hope. With closed rhinoplasty the incisions sit inside the nostrils and the skin of the tip is disturbed less, so tip swelling is often milder in the early weeks. Minimal-incision tip work tends to recover faster still. None of that moves the splint and stitches, though, and those set the earliest sensible flight.

If you've read that closed means no swelling or a weekend recovery, our closed rhinoplasty myths piece takes those claims apart.

Before surgery

Arrive at least a day before your consultation if you can. Jet lag and a design discussion about your face don't mix well. The clinic is open weekdays 10:00 to 19:00 and Saturdays 10:00 to 16:00, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Before surgery, 3D-CT imaging maps your bone and nasal structure so the plan is designed for your nose.

Surgery day and days 1 to 4

Anesthesia is managed by a dedicated anesthesiology specialist. The first few days are usually the heaviest: swelling and bruising tend to build over the first two or three days, your nose feels blocked, and sleeping with your head raised helps. Treat this as hotel time, with short walks and no sightseeing you'd be sorry to cancel. Plenty of people manage light laptop work by day three or four, camera off.

Days 5 to 7

The splint and stitches usually come out in this window. It is the appointment your whole trip hangs on, so build the flight around it. The clinic also has high-concentration oxygen care; ask at booking whether it fits into your plan.

Days 8 to 14

If you booked toward the longer end of the range, these days let swelling settle before a long-haul flight and leave room in case anything needs a second look. For tip work, major swelling usually settles in about 1 to 2 weeks. To see how a two-week trip can be laid out on a calendar, there's a week-by-week rhinoplasty trip in Seoul.

Ask which procedure fits me

When can I fly after closed rhinoplasty?

Day 5 to 7 is that floor, and a day or two after it gives you a cushion if anything needs attention.

The flight itself is mostly about comfort. Cabin air is dry, and pressure changes on descent can make a healing nose feel fuller and stuffier for a while. Drink water, keep your head up if you sleep on board, and don't blow your nose hard. Ask before you leave which nasal sprays or rinses are fine to use in your case.

When will I look like myself on a video call?

For many people the bruising fades enough for a camera somewhere in the second week, and a webcam set slightly farther back covers the rest. The tip is slower. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that the first swelling goes down within a few weeks, but the final contour keeps refining for up to a year.

So if you're back at work in week three, you'll probably notice a fuller tip in close-ups that others may not. That is normal swelling, and it is the reason I'd judge the shape at months, not at the airport.

Doctor's note

With a fixed block of leave, it's tempting to ask for whatever operation fits the calendar. I'd turn that around: decide what your nose needs, then book the nights that plan takes. Rhinoplasty changes a face by fractions of a millimeter, which is why I work only on noses, and it's also why I'd rather you give up a couple of vacation days than board a plane with the splint still on.

Risks, and who you call from home

Risks and side effects to know

Bleeding in the first days, infection, a nose that stays blocked longer than expected, numb skin at the tip, and asymmetry are the complications I'd want you to know by name. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' risk list also includes a hole in the septum and the possibility that revision surgery is needed. Thick skin and grafted tips tend to hold swelling longer. How fast your own nose settles varies from person to person, and whether closed suits it is decided at the in-person exam.

Once you're home

The CDC's medical tourism guidance suggests lining up follow-up care with a doctor at home before you travel and keeping copies of your medical records. Do both before surgery day, not after. If you notice rising pain, fever, bleeding that won't stop, or a sudden change in shape after a knock, see a doctor locally promptly.

Forum threads fill up with photos of week-two noses taken on planes, and many of them show ordinary swelling. Reading those rhinoplasty threads with a checklist helps you sort what's normal from what is worth asking about.

Picking your dates

Here is how I'd think about the range. A full rhinoplasty with cartilage support, a revision, or a plan involving osteotomy makes the 14-night end more sensible, because there is more swelling to let settle before a long flight. If you want the reasoning behind that range in more detail, see how the 7 to 14 night stay is worked out, and TIANA's English rhinoplasty page shows how each procedure fits together.

If you're comparing Korea closed rhinoplasty doctors on how short a stay they suggest, compare the plan behind the number too. A shorter stay that comes from a smaller operation is a different thing from a shorter stay squeezed out of the same one.

Once you know your leave window, message us on WhatsApp with the exact dates and a line about what you'd like changed in your nose, and ask which end of the 7 to 14 night range to book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Can I wear glasses after closed rhinoplasty?

Glasses that rest on the bridge are usually avoided for a while, especially after a bridge implant or osteotomy, because pressure can affect the healing shape. Ask your surgeon how long that applies to your plan before you travel.

Q2Is it OK to work from the hotel during the first week?

Many people manage light laptop work after the first few days, with the head kept up and plenty of breaks. Bending over, lifting and anything strenuous are best left until your surgeon clears them.

Q3Does a bridge implant or osteotomy make recovery longer?

Bone work and bridge changes often add bruising and swelling around the eyes and bridge, so plans that include them usually belong toward the longer end of the 7 to 14 night range.

Q4What should I take home with me after surgery?

Copies of your medical records and the details of the procedure performed, so a doctor at home can see what was done. The CDC's medical tourism guidance recommends arranging this before you travel.

Q5Is the clinic open on weekends?

TIANA is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00 and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Weekday hours are 10:00 to 19:00.
